Description

Copygrove Copse is situated in a region of West Sussex long associated with woodland, forming part of what is historically termed the Lower Weald. Indeed, the peaceful and historic village of Northchapel, half a mile to the southeast, was once renowned for traditional industries dependent on woodlands such as glass and brick making.

Throughout Copygrove Copse, one can see numerous signs of former traditional management of chestnut coppice with oak standard management. The deep clay soils have produced some magnificent oak trees extending high into the upper canopy.

To the southeast these widely spaced standards rise over an understorey of good quality mature sweet chestnut coppice stools. These have not been coppiced for some time and represent a significant volume of useful timber. Other species of broadleaf tree growing at Copygrove Copse include ash, cherry, yew, hazel and an abundance of holly.

The rich biodiversity includes woodland mammals - deer, foxes and badgers whilst the birds include songbirds, owls and buzzards. This secluded woodland has a very peaceful and relaxing atmosphere and is surrounded on three sides by agricultural fields. Parallel to the eastern boundary is a power line. An informal path runs through the woodland from north to south.

If It Were Mine

The woodland has a superb atmosphere, with excellent amenity value and is ideal for the aspiring small scale woodland owner. In the medium-term, I would coppice the mature chestnut stools, allowing more light to reach the woodland understorey enhancing the ground flora and butterfly population.
