| Description: | Yew Tree Copse is a mature broadleaved woodland on the banks of the Basingstoke Canal. The trees growing here are mainly Oak (both English and some Turkey Oak as well), Sweet Chestnut, Ash, Sycamore, Field maple, Birch and Willow. There is an outstanding ancient Yew tree standing in the middle of the woodland that is likely to be in excess of 300 years old (see photo below). The woodland is holding a large quantity of mature hardwood timber, some of which is very large diameter, of high quality and very valuable. There is also a large quantity of ‘underwood’ that would prove a valuable and sustainable source of firewood to a household with a wood burning stove. The woodland is classified as Ancient Woodland, confirming that there is evidence that the woodland has had continuous tree cover since 1600. The Basingstoke Canal is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), designated for the aquatic life found here, but this designation stops at the banks of the canal. Yew Tree Wood has in excess of 350 metres of canal bank. We are informed that Pike, Roach and Perch have been regularly caught in the canal. The woodland has a year-round stream running through it. This stream runs underneath the canal and could provide a water supply to enlarge two ponds that are located in the southern end of the woodland. A keen fisherman could possibly develop these ponds as an addition to the fishing to be had on the canal. |
